Human Afazali became the youngest coach in Iranian professional football history
at
30 when he took charge of division one side Shahab Zanjan. During his three years
with the club, he implemented the modern 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 systems with flat back
four which was refreshing and daring in Iran’s football dominated by traditional
3-5-2 formation. Zanjan club produced some fluid and contemporary football despite
limited talent and finance. Afazali’s tactical genius and practical savvy did not
go unnoticed. After a friendly match between Iran’s national team and Shahab Zanjan
in Tehran, Iran’s then head coach Miroslov Ciro Blazovic,
who had already guided
his Croatian side to third place in World Cup ’98 invited Human to join the national
team staff as technical advisor and analyst. Ciro, “Human is a football mastermind
and we need to have him on board even though we are fully staffed. He simply must
join us.” After Ciro departed, Afazali stayed with the national team for four more
years as newly promoted Branko Ivankovic called Human ‘my right hand man’. With
a gold medal in Asian Games, third place finish in Asian cup, a World Cup 2006 appearance
with Iran, and more than 100 international
matches under his belt, the 35-year old
tactician is considering offers from Iran and abroad.
